A New Twist on an Favorite Day – SPORTS DAY

Two successful events in February showcased SOFKIN to the wider community. On February 11, SOFKIN partnered with seven other local NGOs and foundations to host a Sports Day, attended by over 400 excited children. Activities for the younger children included a sack race, frog jump, lemon and spoon, and musical chairs. Older children competed in a variety of individual and relay races, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, and ball throwing. We are grateful to PamTen Software Solutions, the primary sponsor, and other local businesses for funding and supporting this amazing event. See our sponsors here.

Stars Sing for SOFKIN

On February 19, a live concert featuring award winning singers KS Chitra and SP Charan was held to raise funds for SOFKIN. It was a sold out crowd, with over 2,000 people attending this benefit concert, which raised over $15,000 for SOFKIN children.  These reknown performers sang the songs of famous lyricist Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry for an incredible evening of music.

The concert also allowed SOFKIN to tell our story to a broader audience.  As part of the program, SOFKIN children performed two dances and the crowd was shown a video about SOFKIN.  Chaya Pamula, SOFKIN Founder and current Executive Director, also spoke about our important work caring for destitute and neglected children. We are again grateful to PamTen Software Solutions for being the primary sponsor of the event, as well as the many other organizations who helped make this event such a success.  See a complete list of guests of honor, sponsors and partners here

Sudha Sekhar, owner of Kalanjali School of Dance in New Jersey, USA, and a long time supporter of SOFKIN, visited SOFKIN for the first time in February.  She reported being very impressed with the programs and services she was able to see first hand.  She also had a chance to review the dances the children were to perform at the KS Chitra and SP Charan concert and offered some last minute tips – although she said that the children were very well prepared! She is currently exploring offering online classes in Indian classical dance from her studio in New Jersey for interested boys and girls at SOFKIN.

March Celebrations

In March, the children of SOFKIN participated in two celebrations. Holi – the Hindu Festival of Colours, Love and Spring –  was celebrated on March 8.  The children had fun playing colours in the morning and enjoyed a festive lunch and dinner.

International Women’s Day was celebrated at SOFKIN on March 8.  Both boys and girls helped create a one-hour program commemorating the day.  The girls welcomed the boys in a Harathi practice and thanked them for their support and talked about women who inspired them, especially Chaya. The boys developed a slide presentation and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting their SOFKIN sisters, Chaya and the housemothers.

Staying Connected

A group of SOFKIN alumni – boys and girls who have “graduated” from SOFKIN and are now adults living on their own – has recently been formed. The initial goals of the group are to help the children by tutoring them, helping with SOFKIN events and become a Child Sponsor and/or bringing in other sponsors. They are committed to having at least one alumni group member visit SOFKIN every weekend to interact with the children.

The Alumni Group convenes online every Saturday to discuss these goals and other issues relevant to SOFKIN. Current alumni include Mythri Vulpe, coordinator for the Group, Kranthi Vulpe, Nivedita Rapole, Niharika Beesa, Meena Chintha, Nikhil Beesa and Jagdish Goud. It is inspiring to see the SOFKIN story come full circle!

Several other SOFKIN supporters are also volunteering their time to tutor our students.Mohan Pamula (SOFKIN Board Member), Sudher Sir, Akash and C.V. Satayanarayan – are all tutors in mathametics – along with Anish (chess class), Abhiram (singing class), and Ram Mohan Rao (accounting). We are so thankful for all your contributions.

With Much Gratitude

During the very hectic month of February, Hely Desai came to spend time as an intern at SOFKIN. It was a marvelous experience for both the children and for Hely. You can read about her stay on her website here. As Hely says,

“…it never felt like less than a blessing. I would spend countless nights lying awake because my heart was just too full. I would think about each child and how far their curiosity spreads – how much love they have to give. There are many things I have learned during my time at SOFKIN but the one that stands out the most to me is the importance of love and community.”

It is a wonderful story and we are genuinely grateful for Hely’s assistant and kindness throughout the month.

Continuing with our theme of gratitude for all the people who are helping to support SOFKIN, we would like to offer sincere thanks for those who made donations or were food, child or in-kind sponsors in January, February and March. See this list of supporters and sponsors for the past three months.

A final shout out to everyone who has supported SOFKIN over the past months and years. We truly could not provide the love and care that allow our children to grow and thrive without all of you!
